About Us

Central Medical is led by Dr Jon Scott, and a team of GP’s, Nurses, welcoming reception staff and practice manager.

Jon is originally from the UK and came to Oamaru when he purchased an existing practice and formed Central Medical in July 1995. Jon worked for a few years in Balclutha, Palmerston North for a while, and found he preferred life in the South Island. When looking for an ideal place to settle, somewhere between Dunedin and Christchurch, the timely opportunity arose to form a new practice in Oamaru which has exceeded all expectations, providing medical services for over 20 years to the local community.

Medical Students

Central Medical is a teaching practice and we have four medical students per year who join us for four weeks at a time. These medical students are in their 5th year of training and are here to gain experience in rural General Practice.

At times you may be asked to see a medical student before a doctor, or have a medical student sit in with you on your consultation or examination.

Please feel welcome to decline the involvement of a medical student which we will accept without question.

Cornerstone Accreditation

We are proud to be the only practice in Oamaru with Cornerstone Accreditation. We have worked hard for this and it is a mark of excellence that is awarded by The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners on a 4 year cycle.
